With just 25 games to play, Twins closer Johnny Lockdown enters September a perfect 28 for 28 in save opportunities.
As a team, the Twins have 48 saves, so the fact that Lockdown only has 28 on a 98 win team is a little alarming. This has been a byproduct of the offense pushing the games out of being a save opportunity and the current RP simply staying in for the 9th to finish it.
It will be interesting to see how his save total effects both the AL RP of the Year and AL Closer ballots. Lockdown is 8th in the AL in saves, which ultimately probably will keep him from getting some hardware unless he really racks up saves in September. However, it is pretty difficult to totally ignore his 0.70 ERA and 0.434 OPS against. If he can keep those figures under 1 and .450 respectively, maybe he has a shot.
It appears that this will be Lockdown's lowest save total since his rookie year, where he was only 32 of 42 in attempts. Since that time, he has converted 173 of 187 opportunities, which is a staggering 93% success rate. He now has 205 saves for his career.
