At 30, Pope Benedict XVI has probably sacrificed hundreds and hundreds of at-bats by playing on the Twins. However, he has 4 World Series rings and the team has paid him like a full-time starter, so he has never complained. The unsung hero has always been a vital part of the team's attack vsLHP, his career OPS sits over .800 and he usually enters games he doesn't start. In July, Pope did what he has always done, hit. However, he did it a little better than even he is accustomed to doing.
July: .389/.500/.861/1.361, 2 2b, 5 hr, 8 runs, 8 rbi, 8 bb
Yes, those are real numbers. Getting on base half of his at-bats, plus hitting for power. All while playing defense at an elite level, catching, RF, 3B, LF, whatever.
2061: .277/.367/.535/.903, 7 2b, 11 hr, 22 runs, 27 rbi, 22 bb
Needless to say, Benedict XVI is playing like he wants more at-bats. As per usual, he won't voice that opinion, but his play may dictate that it happens anyways.
